      • THE SITUATION
        ON 2ND STREET

        UNSAFE

        UNHEALTHY

        UNSUSTAINABLE

         

        • No effective enforcement of existing traffic laws
        • Drivers seeking to access Sterling/Bryant on-ramp break traffic laws and endanger pedestrians, cyclists, area residents, and other drivers
        • Altercations, horn honking, and other health risks caused by gridlock, illegal turns and road rage

        • "Fender benders” and more serious vehicle crashes
        • Muni buses and emergency vehicles blocked Residents of the Clocktower and 355 Bryant denied safe access and egress from their established parking structures
        • 2nd Street improvements worsened existing safety problems and created new ones

      • “The traffic situation around 2nd Street in SOMA is currently not safe for pedestrians, cyclists, residents and businesses. We need to change the situation before there are more deaths and injuries in the neighborhood.”

        • 12,000+ cars use Bryant/Sterling on-ramp per day

        • 2nd/Bryant completely overwhelmed due to freeway on-ramp

        • Lawbreakers rule the roads:

          • Manic rivers executing illegal turns; lane changes; speeding into oncoming lanes; running red lights; driving in cycle and parking lanes

          • Blocking the street grids and pedestrian crossings
